Sports Art 101

There are many types of artwork we offer. These simple definitions should help you identify which one is right for you.
  • Original Paintings - Originals are just that: the original and a one of a kind painting. Most of these original works of art are acrylic paint on canvas. Acrylic paint is fast-drying paint that can resemble a watercolor or oil painting. Whereas oil paints normally turn yellow as they age/dry (oxidize), acrylic paints, at least in the 50 years since invention, do not yellow, crack, or change.

  • Giclees (pronounced zhee-CLAY) - This is a high-end re-production process that involves spraying more than four million droplets per second onto archival art paper or canvas. While similar to airbrush, the Giclee process is much finer. Each piece is carefully hand mounted onto a drum, rotating during the process. Giclees are becoming one of the most popular forms of print making largely because they can be printed as needed and the incredible color separations available. They can be printed on paper and canvas.

  • Embellishments or Recreations on Canvas - These beautiful works are a Giclee with enhancements. The artist spends several hours adding beautiful detail to the Giclee to give each piece a unique look and to give it the feel of an original.

  • Lithographs - Lithographs are prints made from plates - similar to how a newspaper is made. This print usually comes on a glossy piece of paper and offers lower price point for fans to own great art.

  • Artist Proof's - An artist proof is a lithograph that is signed and numbered. The artist and publisher inspect for quality control and approval. It is worth more because the edition size is much smaller.

  • Serigraph - A serigraph is a fine art print where each color (from one to hundreds) is added to the paper or canvas individually as it is pressed through silk stencils (or a man-made simulation) with a squeegee. Serigraphs are usually identified by the expanses of flat or evenly graded color. The color is a uniform layer of pigment coating the paper or canvas. This is a painstaking process and usually results in small editions. A single print may take as many as 25 days to complete. Many experts feel this method holds true to the original. This, coupled with the fact that this process takes so much longer, usually means these prints retail at a higher value than a lithograph.

  • Posters - Posters offer the lowest quality copy of original art and the lowest price point available for art ownership. This work is usually printed on a glossy paper.
